Volunteer Events

Volunteering for Great Parks of Hamilton County will lead you to fun, rewarding and unforgettable experiences! Help with invasive plant removal, patrol one of our more than 70 miles of trails, volunteer at our Shaker Trace Nursery or interact directly with park guests at one of our gift shops, visitor centers or nature programs. Join our outstanding team of volunteers and staff members and learn new skills, meet people with similar interests, all while making a difference in your community. Whether you have time to volunteer long-term, a few weeks or only once or twice a year, Great Parks of Hamilton County has a place for you! It's fun, rewarding and easy to get involved. Plant Removal at Withrow Nature Preserve

Some plant species diminish biodiversity, outcompete native species and threaten the ecosystem. Learn how to identify and properly treat aggressive plants that could be present in your backyard while removing them along the Trout Lily Trail. This project is from 10 a.m. to noon.

Dam Repairs at Miami Whitewater Forest

The dam along Strimple Road is in need of repairs and maintenance to ensure its integrity and stability for years to come. Add clay dirt to restabilize the bank and reduce dam bank erosion. Remove log debris to allow the drains to control water flow. By completing these necessary repairs, the dam can function at its best to effectively maintain the ecosystem! Ability to handle traversing uneven terrain is required. This project is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Plant Removal at Newberry Wildlife Sanctuary

Newberry Wildlife Sanctuary is a state-dedicated, 100-acre natural area home to a variety of plant and animal species that live among waterfalls and wooded hillsides. Help us tackle aggressive honeysuckle along the creek at this conservation area. This project is from 9 to 11 a.m.

Landscape Bed Maintenance at Avoca Trailhead

Remove excess mulch, then add topsoil and compost to existing beds to prepare them for spring plantings! Additional requirements include standing and bending while working on uneven surfaces. This project is from 9 a.m. to noon.

Great Miami River Cleanup at Shawnee Lookout

Protect the vital riparian corridor and slopes along the Great Miami River by picking up litter. Every spring, there is a chance of flooding, which can lead to trash and debris accumulation in low-lying areas and slopes along the Great Miami River. March is an excellent time to collect litter from areas that can be challenging to access during the growing seasons. Additional requirements include standing for long periods; bending, kneeling, and traversing on uneven terrain; lifting heavy objects. This project is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Stick Pickup at Glenwood Gardens

Gather and remove sticks that have fallen from nearby trees for easy future mowing! Registration closes on Tuesday, March 17. Additional requirements include walking hilly terrain along a paved trail. This project is from 9 a.m. to noon.

Plant Removal at Mitchell Memorial Forest

Remove plant species in high-quality natural areas near the Mountain Bike Trail to preserve the beauty of this deep-woods trail and habitat. This project is from 9 to 11 a.m.

Plant Removal at Fernbank Park

Hunt for honeysuckle to ensure our new park signage stands out! Removing plants like honeysuckle helps reestablish native species, including sensitive spring ephemerals. Spring ephemerals are the first flowers that pollinators find to enjoy and jumpstart their spring. Additional Requirements: The worksite is rather flat, but there is always a chance of tripping hazards, low tree branches, and muddy terrain. This project is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ohio River Sweep at Woodland Mound

Great Parks is proud to collaborate with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) to take part in one of the biggest multi-state litter pickups in the country! Annually, volunteers from the six states that border the Ohio River remove litter at multiple locations along the river and many of its tributaries. Join us at the Woodland Mound Boat Ramp, formerly known as the Steamboat Bend Boat Ramp, to assist in picking up litter washed up from the Ohio River. You are welcome to bring your own trash grabber! Trash bags and gloves will be provided. This project is from 9 a.m. to noon.
