Volunteer Events

Volunteering for Great Parks of Hamilton County will lead you to fun, rewarding and unforgettable experiences! Help with invasive plant removal, patrol one of our more than 70 miles of trails, volunteer at our Shaker Trace Nursery or interact directly with park guests at one of our gift shops, visitor centers or nature programs. Join our outstanding team of volunteers and staff members and learn new skills, meet people with similar interests, all while making a difference in your community. Whether you have time to volunteer long-term, a few weeks or only once or twice a year, Great Parks of Hamilton County has a place for you! It's fun, rewarding and easy to get involved. Winton Lake Cleanup

Celebrate earth month this year at the Winton Lake Cleanup! Removing litter from all over Winton Lake requires all hands on deck, so bring a group or sign up solo and make new friends. For those volunteering as a group, register all participants together. Group sizes are limited to 20 per cleanup site, and site assignments are provided in advance. Volunteers below the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration closes April 7th. Contact volunteer@greatparks.org with questions.

Litter Cleanup at Woodland Mound

Keep our park and waterways beautiful and free of litter. Pick up litter in the Steamboat Bend area after the Ohio River floods. This project is from 10 a.m. - noon.

Plant Removal at Winton Woods

Support this ongoing project and improve the health of the forest’s understory along the Great Oaks Trail by removing plant species. Learn tips and tricks for identifying aggressive plant species and properly treating and managing them to prevent regrowth. This project is from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Garlic Mustard Pull at Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve

Remove a pesky aggressive species, garlic mustard, that can easily by pulled out of the ground! Invasive species threaten the ecosystem by diminishing biodiversity and outcompeting our native species. Learn how to identify and properly remove non-native plants that could be present in your backyard while removing them alongside our knowledgeable employees! This project is from 9 - 11 a.m.

Flower Bed Mulching & Wild Garlic Pull at Glenwood Gardens

Mulch the annual flower beds and pull wild garlic, which smells like delicious onions. Registration closes on Tuesday, April 14. This event runs from 9:00 am - noon.

Site Cleanup at Mitchell Memorial Forest

Explore parts of the park less travelled and remove old fencing and posts from a previously used bow hunting site. This event runs from 9:00 - 11:00 am.

Trimming up the Trail at Fernbank Park

Let's take a slow hike and start a proactive trim along the Sycamore Trail to halt overgrowing plants that may choke the trail and disrupt hikers enjoying our wooded area. While walking 1-mile trail, we will cut back vegetation to widen the trail path approximately 6 feet across. If time allows, we will remove honeysuckle further off the trail. This event runs from 10:00 am - noon.

Native Flower Planting at Avoca Trailhead

Plant native flower species to improve the aesthetic of the landscaping beds and attractiveness to beneficial pollinator species. This project is from 9 a.m. - noon.

Mulch Mania at Shawnee Lookout

Mulch tree rings and landscape beds near the Schoolhouse Area! Mulching around trees provides multiple benefits, including moisture retention around a tree’s root systems, nutrient addition to aid with a tree’s health and longevity and weed reduction, leading to reducing the need for continued maintenance and use of herbicides. Not to mention, mulching gives our developed areas a nice glow-up for the upcoming busy season. This event runs from 9:30 - 11:30 am.
