Unmounted Beginner Lessons

Back to Basics

Through unmounted lessons, entry to novice-level riders deepen their understanding of horse communication, behavior, and care. Students develop into well-rounded horsemen from ground up while exploring equine anatomy, handling techniques, and groundwork exercises designed to strengthen the connection between horse and rider.

Note: students do not ride during this program. All lessons take place in the classroom or barns.

Beginner Riding Lessons

Advanced Novice Riding Lessons

At this fourth level of lessons, students have progressed from Novice and are developing advanced skills like group trot and trotting without stirrups while riding more challenging horses than beginners.
Beginning at this level, riders learn how to tack their horses, allowing them to ride in either English or Western style during any available time slot. Tacking requires students to arrive 10-15 minutes early.

Intro to Canter Level Riding Lessons

At this fifth level of lessons, students have progressed from Advanced Novice and are reviewing advanced walk and trot skills each week (including posting, sitting, two-point, standing and no-stirrups trot work). They also begin learning to canter with balance and control.

Cost: $280 ($200 for Monday session) Location: Winton Woods | Farm & Equestrian Center

Intermediate Level Riding Lessons

At this sixth and final level of beginner lessons, students build on Intro to Canter by refining advanced walk and trot skills each week (including posting, sitting, two-point, standing and no-stirrups trot work). They also develop exceptional control and balance at a canter gait on various horses. After this level, riders are encouraged to choose their next discipline: Jumping, Contesting or Dressage.

Upper Level Flat Lessons

Dressage Lessons

This class is for riders interested in practicing introductory to training-level Dressage positions and movements. Students at this level have progressed from the Intermediate level.

Contesting Lessons

These classes are for riders who have passed the Intermediate level and want to learn Western speed events like Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Flags Race. The focus is on balanced position and excellent control at a walk, trot and canter gait. Contesting students are encouraged to enter the Farm & Equestrian Center’s Schooling Shows on their lesson horses!

This jump class is for riders pursuing hunt seat equitation as their chosen discipline. They must have exceptional walk, trot and canter skills with and without stirrups. Students at this level have progressed from Ground Poles and can ride a wide variety of horses.

IEA Team Lessons

By invitation only. To qualify for IEA lessons, riders must be current team members or selected for the team through an IEA tryout.
IEA Team lessons are for upper-level riders pursuing hunt seat equitation competition. The Interscholastic Equestrian Association program allows middle school and high school-aged students to train and compete in the same style as IHSA (Collegiate) equitation riders. This fantastic program promotes excellent riding and sportsmanship in a supportive team environment.
